I LOVED the Church Hat video! Those hats, amazing! I had never considered the art of making a hat, it was fun to catch just a glimpse of that.

Hi Marcie - Only read part of these, but was drawn to J. Drew Lanham video and book. I am so excited! I watched the video and other two previous ones of his. Did you know he has a book just released April 15, 2021 called "Sparrow Envy?" This week is Migration Madness in CT - an Audubon thing where we count as many bird species as we can. I'm not an avid birder, but learning. (I'm more up on things I can see in a microscope, hence my Instagram name "Microbenut".) This is my burning question too - how can we engage more people of diverse backgrounds in exploring nature and engaging in conservation efforts? I just recently joined a committee on a conservation board to explore this and other questions of bias and environmental justice. Any thoughts?

Besides the obvious - make it safer. Yet another grief of pandemic crazytimes was that travesty of white woman abuse of privilege in NYC...which I'm sure is only one of many such incidents.

I'm like you Cindy. I'm just beginning to pay attention to diverse voices who are nature geeks and scientists. I'm not a birder, either. But I would say that my husband and I are bird watchers and we do enjoy taking in nature. I'm so intrigued about your conservation board. Have you thought about reaching out to Lanham? Maybe he'd have some insight.

That's a good idea! I just started the Conservation board in November 2020, and last month signed up for the Equity and Environmental Justice committee which hasn't met yet - although our whole board had an "Undoing Structural Racism" training in February. So, early in the process. Right now our brains are whirling separately - hopefully someday soon we will meet.

Lanham's new book is poetry, and I am both enjoying and being challenged by it.

Marci - have you heard of the bird names for birds movement? I heard a webinar on it through the CT Audubon society (which isn't the same as the national one). It's a movement to remove eponymous names and make birding more inclusive. Maybe Lanham mentioned it in his book (I haven't read the one you mentioned yet - it is on my list - currently enjoying his poetry book.) Here is the link
