I just read this with a group of friends for Battle of the Books (a book trivia event that started as a school thing then libraries recreated it for adults). It was a charming book! And thanks for the primer on inspiration vs appropriation.
Oh gladly. The public libraries here hold a competition for 4th-12th graders each spring. Each level has a book list and school teams split up those books between their members and read them, then compete in a a trivia night hosted by the local librarians. It's possible this is a national thing, but I'm not sure.
Then the libraries decided to expand this idea and created book lists for adults and teams of 5 or 6 read the books on the list and attend a trivia night. The cost is $25 or so per team. The one I go to is hosted by a local brewery so we all go, nerd out about books, do our best on the trivia , and get some snacks and drinks. It's so popular, they fill up every time.
Hey Marcie - I wasn't able to listen to the article voiceover while I was out today. I tried it on my phone several times & then on my laptop once I got home. Maybe I'm doing something wrong on my end? If the recording is not available, I will definitely try to read the article later.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I found it a bit puzzling that he got flak for being inspired by the Sixties Scoop because fiction so often takes threads from reality and weaves them into story as a way of giving us new perspectives. It's one of the things that makes story so powerful.
I liked this book a lot when it was part of a book club I was in a few years back. It wasn't on my radar, so it was a surprise read. I appreciated the author's approach to differences and fear. Those will be big in the year ahead. Thank you for bringing it to us and showing it in terms of all we will be going through this year. I love the idea of stories helping people process and even being written to provide a way to do that. I always look forward to your take on things.
Well, now I feel kinda bad because our inside weather is because it’s going to be in the 50’s and raining 🤣 But I swear California cold is a real thing! Bay Area cold hits different
This was such a sunshine love hug of a book when I read it a few years back!
I’m sooooo excited for the sequel.
A SEQUEL?!!!!
I just preordered it yesterday!!!! We should do a bookclub!!!!!
I LOVED the audiobook!
Right?!?!?! I fell in love with each kiddo!
Thank you for your recommendation and all of your words. I'm so sad and terrified of the world right now and you described it perfectly
