Hey Marcie, I just listened to this article while walking the dog, and I seriously laughed out loud during the Monroe slapping sections. :) Such great comedy & realness encapsulated in the way you described his behavior & especially your mother's reactions. It was like a little short film in my head. Your descriptions are so colorful. I also have NOT seen the Barbie movie. I think I have an internal resistance paired with disinterest. My Jamaican dad didn't want to spend money on purchasing white dolls in the 70s, and though I had different kinds of dolls growing up, I don't have any personal nostalgia with Barbies. I've also read & listened to some thoughtful reviews on the Barbie movie, & I'm still not feeling any pull to go spend money on this. But like you, I will likely view it from the comfort of my home when it becomes available... or not. ;) Time will tell. As always, thank you for honestly addressing the topic as it stands with you right now.

I was like your dad with Max. I wouldn't allow Max to play with White dolls. Plus, they went to the Waldorf School for PreK and I'm sure I was brainwashed into believing that any commerical toy was propaganda of some sort. I was an overly cautious mother in some ways but completely naive in other ways.

It was better than I thought it would be, with deeper, complex themes I didn’t expect paired with silliness. And I love that the far right hates it so. 🙌🏽 💗

I plan on thoroughly enjoying it. You’ve just co-signed my plan!
